1. Cupcakes. Choose from vanilla or chocolate. If you need more than that…

2. Signed books make special Mother’s Day gifts. For yourself or for your favorite mamas. AND you’re supporting a local indie bookseller, Full Circle, which is a way cool and smart thing to do.

3. Drawing for cool door prizes. Trichology  Salon is donating Unite hair product and a complimentary cut. Tina Ross is donating a cute teal Miche wallet. Buzz Books is donating a Dance Mom tote bag and a TMI Mom t-shirt (we’ll get your size and mail it to the winner!)

New deal for Descendants; Dance Mom Takes the Stage

24 Mar

by Malena Lott

The Hive is pleased to announce the new adult digital novella series Descendants by Jenny Peterson. Her series began in short story form, introducing us to Rachel and her best friend Kendra who are both supernatural descendants tasked with fighting demons, though they have different powers.

Author Jenny Peterson

Author Jenny Peterson

In Prom Dates to Die For: On her eighteenth birthday, Rachel “inherited,” meaning she came into her legacy as a Descendant, a demon hunter. Her first mission is to save her boyfriend Jake from a succubus the night of her senior prom.

Buzz and reviewers agreed that we needed to see see more of the friends and couldn’t wait to see what college had in store for them, which Peterson gave us in…

Something Wicked: Rachel is now at college at Saint Etienne with her best friend Kendra, who was revealed as a half-mermaid. Rachel juggles college with her demon hunting duties, which have included tracking and killing a wendigo. Sidney Martin, another Descendant who was raised as a demon hunter, joins Rachel and Kendra as they fight a new threat—sirens. With the help of the merpeople, they must defeat the sirens and a kraken. Though Rachel and Kendra don’t really like Sid, they gain an uneasy friend.

Again, YA reviewers loved the tale, which prompted Buzz to approach Peterson with hands clasped and a “pretty please” on our lips. Snappy dialogue, inventive world and butt-kicking characters? More, please. Turns out the author hadn’t stopped thinking about the characters, either and agreed to write a series. Buzz plans on releasing them every three months beginning in September 2013.

Learn more about Prom and Something Wicked on their book pages here and here. Get to know Jenny on her web site and on Twitter.

Is the competitive dance world anything like it’s portrayed on reality TV? My dance mom BFF, Jill Martin, and I decided to create a guidebook for dance moms who are either new to competitive or team dance or who are considering it. dancemom4

About the book:

Two dance moms. One crazy dance world. A humorous and helpful guidebook for parents of dancers, written by two dance moms who have not only “been there,” but “are there!” Lott and Martin talked to dance moms across the country, dance professors, a psychologist, and instructors, to bring the stage lights directly on the difficulties and joys of raising a dancer and helping them be successful. Is it anything like reality TV? —the role of a dance mom —the healthy dancer —the leap from dancer to team or company dancer —time and financial investment —improving communication —dance manners —camps, conventions and competitions —dance statistics —dealing with mistakes —how to make dance fun for moms Dance moms with dancers of all ages and stages will find useful information to help on the journey from dance class to stage star.

Learn more about the authors and read an excerpt on the official website. Join them on Facebook where they share the latest merchandise and giveaways and discussion on dance topics. The book is out now in  paperback and ebook.

—————————-

TMI Mom is about to overshare! Heather Davis’ first humorous essay book is officially out April 1st, but the paperback is already live so be one of the first to get your hands on the funny.

If you live in the OKC area, you’re invited to the Moms Rock book launch where Davis will join Dance authors Martin and Lott at Full Circle Bookstore on April 14th from 2-4 p.m. for a signing, food and door prizes.

Stay up to date on TMI Mom’s Facebook page!

Note to Writers

The Hive is always open for submissions, so we wanted to provide some tips and information that may help you along.

  • Buzz seeks a partnership with authors, which means the author needs to be active and hard-working before and after the launch. Active blog, social media, reader communities, etc. That also means you making an investment in your work with time and promotion. We do what we can, but the market is so saturated it’s going to take all of us working together to set you apart and get attention for your work.
  • The authors need to be open to feedback and that could mean substantial work on your story. That being said, we have a full Hive right now so the more work the manuscript needed, even if we loved it, could mean a longer delay in getting it published. Having a professional image BEFORE we sign you is important, too. We want to know you ALREADY take yourself seriously.
  • We’re flexible and read industry news daily so we can stay on top of what’s happening out there, and so should you. We welcome authors who are published with other houses! We are also open to authors who have self-published. Yes, we look at the big picture and personality and professionalism matter. As a small press we invite those to the table who are going to bring something to the table and who are a good fit for the team. Trust your gut. We want it to be a win-win for both of us. And it’s MUCH harder work than you think it will be.

Timing? If we sign you now, it likely means your story wouldn’t be released until 2014 so if you were hoping for something faster, consider other options or better  yet, spend that time building your platform and releasing short stories or other work that will gain you readers until your book comes out. We’ll have this discussion with our authors upfront.

We’ve got another deal to announce next week as well as cool new contests, so subscribe to this blog so you won’t miss out. And thanks for celebrating stories with us!

Spring Buzz: PR, Oversharing & Dancing

8 Mar

by Malena Lott

Is spring supposed to come in like a lamb? Feels more like a lion already. In the Hive, we’ve been busy with our spring releases. I’d like to say a special “thank you” to senior editor Mari Farthing, our authors, and a welcome to new assistant Kristine Meggenberg who is a recent graduate and is learning quickly. When you have a small shop like we do at Buzz (and parent Athena Institute), we wear many hats so it’s key our team approaches it all with a positive attitude. I feel fortunate.

What I love about our 2013 list is how diverse it is. Even after two years, it feels right to publish books based on quality and not a set genre or quota.

March

Former Hollywood publicist Cyndy Hoenig kicks off our Little Brand business book series with her book, PR ROCK STAR, which shares DIY PR tips for small biz. I’ve been in the marketing communications field for almost twenty years and I learned a lot from her book. I can’t wait for those lightbulb moments business owners and managers are sure to have reading her book. Trade paperback and ebook.

littlebrandprrockstar

Next we go backstage with DANCE MOM SURVIVAL GUIDE, a book I co-wrote with my dance mom BFF, Jill Martin. Our girls have been dancing competitively together for two years. The genesis of the book came from me feeling completely lost about the world of dance. Together Jill and I did a lot of research, including talking to dance moms, instructors and experts around the country. You can pre-order copies here.  We’re getting ready to do some fun giveaways over on Facebook page, too. Trade paperback and ebook.

April

Let the over sharing begin! TMI MOM OVERSHARING MY LIFE, the first in a series by Heather Davis, officially launches April Fool’s day (4/1) but the print book will likely be available in two short weeks. Huzzah. Be sure you keep up with her shenanigans on Facebook, too because we have a cool prize package up for grabs in our “mom tour” to promote both books as well as Heather’s only TMI VIP tour. Trade paperback and ebook.

Also in May, we’ll launch our second Little Brand book, THE LITTLE BRAND THAT COULD, which is my first non-fiction book about my other, bigger day job, branding. I’ve branded 199 brands and worked on a thousand projects in the last twenty years. Wowza. I’m very happy to help small businesses find success, utilizing this catchy engine theme. You can keep up with my work over at my website or Facebook page. Thanks for going on this journey with us, readers! xo-M

Yoga for #writerwellness by author Samantha Wilde

27 Feb

by guest author Samantha Wilde

black and white samePeople often ask me how I can be a novelist, minister and yoga teacher –and my answer is I don’t know how not to be. I became a yoga teacher before I became a minister and I did both before I published my first novel, although I have written since childhood (and wrote a few unpublished novels along the way). These different pieces work in me like different instruments in a band; it’s the song I make now, and I like it. The yoga and spiritual practice give the harmony. Without them, I don’t know where I would be. Writing and the journey of publication can be stressful, lonely, frustrating and disheartening. Yoga is an oasis.

Working through five years of revisions on my novel I’ll Take What She Has, released yesterday (at last!), the opportunities to rely upon the gifts and benefits of the practice of yoga offered themselves to me on a daily basis. I don’t suppose that writers need yoga more than anyone else, but they do need yoga. Yoga, the practice of breathing and pausing and mindfully moving, increases creativity and opens spaces for new thoughts and ideas—which are essential not just when plotting for the first time but when figuring out how to fix the tangles of a story and bring it into new form.

Here are my three favorite yoga practices for writers. They are simple. Anyone can do them at any time.

  1. Just three breaths. Do it now. Take three deep, slow, long breaths. Try to get the air down to the bottom of your lungs. You’ll know you’ve accomplished this if your belly rises on the inhalation and softens on the exhalation. I take three breaths with me. I use it whenever I have a natural break. If I go to the bathroom—three breaths. If I break for a cup of tea—three breaths. If I look away from the computer to rest my eyes—three breaths.
  1. Open your heart. Take your hands behind your back and interlace your fingers. Gentle lift your interlaced fingers off your back (any distance is fine) and feel your upper chest opening. Breathe big and high in your chest. Writers (and most people) collapse in the chest, particularly while working on a computer. You can do this one sitting down if you scoot forward to the edge of your seat. It’s a good practice to use many times throughout the day. See if you can’t take three breaths while you’re in it.
  1. Close off your gaze. Rub your hands together quickly until they get warm. Then take the heels of your palms against your closed eyes, pressing gently. Breathe into your eyes, releasing the need to see. As you do this, let your head drop so that you end up supporting most of the weight of your head in your hands.

Many writers practice yoga. It’s important to know that you don’t need an entire class or a whole hour or a yoga mat to get into that yoga space. The idea behind these three simple practices is to take your focus gently inward, to the breath, to your physical body, and away from the external gaze. Where do our novels and stories and poems and books come from? It’s incredible to think of all the creative power a writer possesses. The stories come from the inside out, and we can sink down again—and often—into that source.

I'll TakeAlmost every writer I know feels the pull of distraction, the internet especially, with its urgent demands (email, facebook, twitter!). It’s not simply a matter of not being able to get writing done if we let ourselves get lost in the tyranny of the immediate, it’s losing the gold thread of creative mental attention. Next time you feel you have lost that thread, try one of these practices, or all three, and see if you don’t find a small door opening that will lead you back to the place inside of you where the stories are born.

Samantha Wilde is the author of I’ll Take What She Has and This Little Mommy Stayed Home. The at-home mother of three young children, she is a Kripalu yoga teacher, an interfaith minister, and a voracious reader. Read her blog Wilde Mama, watch some of her funny videos on Facebook, or visit her at samanthawilde.com. Buy her new book here or at your favorite book retailer.
