The Hive is pleased to announce the new adult digital novella series Descendants by Jenny Peterson. Her series began in short story form, introducing us to Rachel and her best friend Kendra who are both supernatural descendants tasked with fighting demons, though they have different powers.

Author Jenny Peterson
In Prom Dates to Die For: On her eighteenth birthday, Rachel “inherited,” meaning she came into her legacy as a Descendant, a demon hunter. Her first mission is to save her boyfriend Jake from a succubus the night of her senior prom.
Buzz and reviewers agreed that we needed to see see more of the friends and couldn’t wait to see what college had in store for them, which Peterson gave us in…
Something Wicked: Rachel is now at college at Saint Etienne with her best friend Kendra, who was revealed as a half-mermaid. Rachel juggles college with her demon hunting duties, which have included tracking and killing a wendigo. Sidney Martin, another Descendant who was raised as a demon hunter, joins Rachel and Kendra as they fight a new threat—sirens. With the help of the merpeople, they must defeat the sirens and a kraken. Though Rachel and Kendra don’t really like Sid, they gain an uneasy friend.
Again, YA reviewers loved the tale, which prompted Buzz to approach Peterson with hands clasped and a “pretty please” on our lips. Snappy dialogue, inventive world and butt-kicking characters? More, please. Turns out the author hadn’t stopped thinking about the characters, either and agreed to write a series. Buzz plans on releasing them every three months beginning in September 2013.

Is the competitive dance world anything like it’s portrayed on reality TV? My dance mom BFF, Jill Martin, and I decided to create a guidebook for dance moms who are either new to competitive or team dance or who are considering it.
About the book:
Two dance moms. One crazy dance world. A humorous and helpful guidebook for parents of dancers, written by two dance moms who have not only “been there,” but “are there!” Lott and Martin talked to dance moms across the country, dance professors, a psychologist, and instructors, to bring the stage lights directly on the difficulties and joys of raising a dancer and helping them be successful. Is it anything like reality TV? —the role of a dance mom —the healthy dancer —the leap from dancer to team or company dancer —time and financial investment —improving communication —dance manners —camps, conventions and competitions —dance statistics —dealing with mistakes —how to make dance fun for moms Dance moms with dancers of all ages and stages will find useful information to help on the journey from dance class to stage star.
Learn more about the authors and read an excerpt on the official website. Join them on Facebook where they share the latest merchandise and giveaways and discussion on dance topics. The book is out now in paperback and ebook.

Note to Writers
The Hive is always open for submissions, so we wanted to provide some tips and information that may help you along.
- Buzz seeks a partnership with authors, which means the author needs to be active and hard-working before and after the launch. Active blog, social media, reader communities, etc. That also means you making an investment in your work with time and promotion. We do what we can, but the market is so saturated it’s going to take all of us working together to set you apart and get attention for your work.
- The authors need to be open to feedback and that could mean substantial work on your story. That being said, we have a full Hive right now so the more work the manuscript needed, even if we loved it, could mean a longer delay in getting it published. Having a professional image BEFORE we sign you is important, too. We want to know you ALREADY take yourself seriously.
- We’re flexible and read industry news daily so we can stay on top of what’s happening out there, and so should you. We welcome authors who are published with other houses! We are also open to authors who have self-published. Yes, we look at the big picture and personality and professionalism matter. As a small press we invite those to the table who are going to bring something to the table and who are a good fit for the team. Trust your gut. We want it to be a win-win for both of us. And it’s MUCH harder work than you think it will be.
Timing? If we sign you now, it likely means your story wouldn’t be released until 2014 so if you were hoping for something faster, consider other options or better yet, spend that time building your platform and releasing short stories or other work that will gain you readers until your book comes out. We’ll have this discussion with our authors upfront.
We’ve got another deal to announce next week as well as cool new contests, so subscribe to this blog so you won’t miss out. And thanks for celebrating stories with us!
