As if a gazelle and not a lazy hound dog, Bovis leaped out the window and into a snowdrift at the side of the SUV. He disappeared from view and Ella’s heart clutched with fear.
“Bovis!” she yelled. Unbelievable. This horrible behavior was so uncharacteristic. She leaned across her now-empty Starbucks cup and tried to peer out the window. “You get back in here now!”
He didn’t listen.
Ella was left with one choice: Leave the dog? For an instant, the thought floated through her mind, suspended like a helium balloon, but then burst with the pinprick of realization that she needed Bovis because—as pathetic as it sounded—he was the only thing left in her life to love.
